UNDER PRESSURE

A jet plane is designed to cruise at a high altitude to save fuel. However, flying high comes at a cost – lack of oxygen. To ensure there’s sufficient oxygen for the passengers to breathe at such heights, the cabin must be pressurised.

Very simply, as the plane climbs, the air becomes thinner and the amount of oxygen decreases. So when the cabin is pressurised as the plane climbs it has the effect of squeezing the air back together, recreating the denser oxygen-rich conditions found closer to the ground. For example, when the Airbus A320 is in flight, the cabin altitude is set automatically near to around 2,500 feet when you are at 25,000 feet and 6,500 feet when the plane is actually at 35,000 feet.

Pressurisation also makes flying more comfortable as it allows for the gradual equalisation of your ears as the plane ascends to cruising altitude.
